Day 1 Arrival in Naples and transfer to Sorrento

There are several ways to travel from Naples to Sorrento:

Private transfer: You can hire a private transfer from Naples International Airport to Sorrento. This is the most comfortable option as you will have a driver waiting for you at the airport and you can reach Sorrento directly without any stops. Many companies offer this service, and you can book in advance online.

Taxi: You can also take a taxi from Naples Airport to Sorrento. You will find taxis waiting outside the airport terminal, and the journey takes around an hour. However, this can be more expensive than a private transfer.

Train: From Naples Central Station, you can take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. This is a commuter train, and the journey takes around one hour. The train is an affordable option, but it can be crowded during peak hours.

Bus: There are also buses that run from Naples to Sorrento. You can take the Curreri bus from the airport, or the Sita bus from Naples central station. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.

Where to stay in Sorrento

Sorrento offers a wide variety of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. Here are some popular areas to consider staying in Sorrento:

Day 2: The Perfect Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary – Sorrento and its surroundings

Sorrento is a beautiful old town located on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Here are some popular things to do in Sorrento:

Visit the Marina Grande: This charming fishing village is located just a short walk from the center of Sorrento and offers a peaceful retreat from the crowds.

Visit the Duomo: The Duomo is Sorrento’s cathedral and features beautiful 14th-century architecture and frescoes. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Explore the historic center: Sorrento’s historic center is filled with narrow streets, colorful buildings, and charming shops and restaurants. Take a stroll through the town’s narrow alleys and admire the beautiful architecture.

Taste the local cuisine: Sorrento is famous for its delicious food, especially seafood and lemon-based dishes. Be sure to try the local specialties such as spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and limoncello (a lemon liqueur).

Visit the Villa Comunale: This beautiful park is located in the center of Sorrento and offers stunning views of the Bay of Naples. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Day 3: Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius day tour

A day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento is a popular excursion.

The tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Sorrento or a nearby meeting point. You will usually travel in a comfortable coach with a guide. The first stop on the tour is Pompeii, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. You will explore the ancient city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The guide will take you through the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii, including the Forum, the House of the Faun, and the Amphitheatre.

After exploring Pompeii, you will have a break for lunch. The tour usually includes a stop at a local restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Italian cuisine. The second part of the tour takes you to Mount Vesuvius, the famous volcano that destroyed Pompeii. You will drive up to a certain point and then hike up to the crater with a guide. The hike takes around 30-40 minutes, and you will have the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Naples from the top.

If you wish to visit on your own

If you prefer to visit Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius on your own (like I did some years ago – here is a blog post about that), here’s how you can do it. From Sorrento, you can take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi train station. The journey takes around 30-40 minutes and trains run frequently. From the station, it’s a short walk to the entrance of the Pompeii archaeological site. Once you arrive at the Pompeii archaeological site, you can purchase a ticket at the entrance. There are audio guides and guided tours available for an additional fee, or you can explore the ruins on your own. It’s recommended to allow at least 2-3 hours to see the highlights of Pompeii.

Getting to Mount Vesuvius: From Pompeii, you can take a bus or taxi to the entrance of Mount Vesuvius National Park. The journey takes around 20-30 minutes. Once you arrive at the entrance, you can purchase a ticket for the shuttle bus that takes you to the higher levels of the mountain. From the shuttle bus stop, it’s a steep uphill hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius. The hike takes around 30-40 minutes and requires a moderate level of fitness. It’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.

After visiting Mount Vesuvius, you can take a bus or taxi back to Pompeii Scavi station and catch the Circumvesuviana train back to Sorrento.

Day 4: Capri one day itinerary by boat

A boat trip to Capri from Sorrento is a popular activity for visitors to the area. The tour usually starts with a departure from the marina in Sorrento. You will board a comfortable boat with a guide and other passengers. The boat ride to Capri takes around 30-40 minutes, depending on sea conditions. During the ride, you will have the opportunity to admire the stunning views of the Sorrento coastline and the Bay of Naples. 

Once you arrive in Capri, the guide will take you on a tour of the island. You will see the famous Faraglioni rock formations, the Blue Grotto (if weather and sea conditions allow), the Piazzetta, and the Gardens of Augustus. You will also have some free time to explore Capri on your own and enjoy lunch at one of the island’s restaurants.

After visiting Capri, you will return to Sorrento in the late afternoon, where the tour ends. The boat trip to Capri typically lasts around 8-9 hours and includes transportation, a guide, and some entrance fees. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea and the charming island of Capri.

Day 5: Positano and its beaches

Positano is a picturesque village located on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. It’s known for its colorful houses perched on steep cliffs, stunning beaches, and romantic atmosphere. Hiking, spending time at the beaches and enjoying Italian cuisine are some of the best things to do in Positano. Positano has two main beaches – Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo Beach. Spiaggia Grande is the largest of the two and is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming. Fornillo Beach is a quieter and more secluded option, with crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the coastline.

There are several hiking trails in and around Positano, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the sea. The Path of the Gods is a popular trail that starts in the nearby village of Agerola and takes you through the scenic countryside to Positano. If hiking is not for you, you can take a boat tour along the Amalfi Coast from Positano, visiting nearby villages and hidden coves. Many boat tours also include stops for swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters.

Positano is home to some of the best restaurants on the Amalfi Coast, serving fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and traditional Italian cuisine. Many restaurants offer stunning views of the sea and the village, making for a romantic and unforgettable dining experience.

Day 6: Hike the Path of the Gods

Hiking the Path of the Gods is a popular activity for visitors to the Amalfi Coast. It starts in the village of Bomerano, which is located near the town of Agerola. You can reach Bomerano by bus from Sorrento or by taking a taxi or private transfer.

The Path of the Gods is a 7.8-kilometer (4.8-mile) trail that runs along the cliffs between Bomerano and the village of Nocelle, near Positano. The trail is well-marked and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the coastline, with several points where you can stop to take in the scenery. It is considered a moderate hike, with some steep and narrow sections that require good physical fitness and sturdy footwear. The trail can be slippery when wet, so it’s best to hike during dry weather conditions. This trail reminds me of the one we did in Cinque Terre.

The hike takes around 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how many stops you make along the way. It’s recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds. You should bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera to capture the stunning views. It’s also recommended to wear comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.

The Path of the Gods ends in the village of Nocelle, where you can take a bus or taxi back to your starting point or continue on to Positano.

Day 7: Amalfi and Ravello day trips

There are many things to do and see in Amalfi and Ravello villages, two picturesque towns to spend time in. Here are some of the top attractions:

Duomo di Sant’Andrea: This stunning 9th-century cathedral is the highlight of Amalfi, with its striking Byzantine and Baroque architecture and beautiful frescoes. Don’t miss the bronze doors, which date back to the 11th century.

Museo Arsenale Amalfi: This museum is located in an old shipyard and showcases the town’s maritime history, with exhibits on shipbuilding, navigation, and fishing.

Piazza del Duomo: This bustling square is the heart of Amalfi and is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a great place to people-watch and take in the local culture.

Beaches: Amalfi has several beautiful beaches, including the Marina Grande, which is the largest and most popular. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, and enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters.

Ravello is a small town located high above the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, known for its stunning views, beautiful gardens, and historic ancient roman villas. Things to do and see in Ravello:

Villa Cimbrone: This historic villa is known for its stunning gardens, which feature sculptures, fountains, and panoramic views of the sea and coast. Don’t miss the famous Terrace of Infinity, which offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Salerno.

Villa Rufolo: Another historic villa, Villa Rufolo features beautiful gardens, a medieval tower, and a museum showcasing the history of the town. The gardens are particularly stunning in the spring when the flowers are in bloom.

Ravello Cathedral: This 11th-century cathedral features a beautiful bronze door, a 13th-century pulpit, and a striking bell tower.

Day 8: Boat tour to Li Galli Islands and swim in the sea

The islands Li Galli are a small archipelago located off the coast of Positano and are known for their stunning natural beauty and fascinating history. The boat tour will take you on a scenic sail along the Amalfi Coast, offering stunning views of the cliffs and coastline. Once you arrive at the Li Galli Islands, you can enjoy some time swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.

Day 10: Relax in Sorrento and departure from Naples

On your last day in Sorrento, take it easy and enjoy for the last time the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Sorrento has several beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun. You may also want to visit several beautiful gardens, including the Villa Comunale and the Gardens of Augustus. These peaceful green spaces offer stunning views of the coastline and are perfect for a relaxing stroll.
